To Read or not to Read, Is This the Question? 7th, 8th and 9th Grades
Students in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades have read abridged editions of books for their home reading assignments. Each class read two books: one easier and one matched to their grade’s difficulty level. Reading is one of the best ways to learn a language, and it is a priority at our school. Below, you can find short descriptions of the books and the students’ opinions about them.

Freckles
There were two girls named Donna and Susie. They were best friends but very different. Donna was pretty with blue eyes and blonde hair. She got every boy in school. Susie had freckles. She hated them! They were the biggest problem for her. One day the new boy came to school named Jack. Susie and Donna both liked him. Donna really wanted him, but they found out that he liked Susie. He asked her to go to disco with him. Then Donna was so angry and jealous. Jack and Susie were having a good time in disco.
This book was interesting, a bit boring, but I liked it.

Tiro’s Story
This is a short book, following the story of a young slave living in the Roman empire, who went to buy something in Pompeii when mount Vesuvius erupted. Tiro was a sixteen year old boy, living with two other slaves at the house of his owner, Pliny. When the volcano erupted they tried their best to get back home as quickly and safely as possible. Their efforts paid off and they made it home safely, only to find that their owner was killed by the eruption. But sadly they stayed slaves and then had to work for Pliny’s son.
Although the book was written in very simple English, I thought the story was interesting. I found it sad that Tiro never lived his dream of owning a pie bakery, but in my opinion that level of historical accuracy to the lives of slaves only adds to the book.

This book is very interesting and I also learnt from it a lot. If I find myself in bad situation, I have friends, parents and teachers to help me.

The Bride Price
This is an interesting story talking about tribes in Nigeria and how parts of their life and day look like. Our main character Akunna and her brother Nnanndo are introduced in the first pages of the book. The story begins when their father dies and they travel to their uncle’s tribe where they have to start from beginning and learn new habits. The story goes on when Akunna starts experiencing the early starts of womanhood and first love.
The story has some hard words that needed longer time to settle into my mind but after all the whole story keeps you in the hook and makes you want to continue reading. I really liked the story as it tells us how different people live around the world. I would absolutely recommend it to people who want to learn about something new.
