Poetry: The Queen of Expression, Grades 7-9
This school year, students have been paying more attention to poetry. They have recited various poems from their books—some with the help of pictures they created themselves. Others have even written their own poems. The eighth-grade students wrote poetry on the topic of the environment.
Here, you can see a selection of their work. The young poets featured are Hana Krasnik Smolič, Brigita Kočevar, Zala Kadunc, and Maša Borković. Zala wrote her poem with inspiration from the wordless picture book The Wave. We are grateful to teacher Evelin Škof for assisting with the PowerPoint presentation. You can view Zala’s poem using the link below.
Three of these poems were performed during the event Kulturni mozaik on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. These poems were part of a program in which poets writing in Slovene also introduced themselves.
In March, the same three poems were presented to the 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade classes. Hana, Brigita, and Zala recited their own poems. Žana Petrač assisted with the computer, except in the 9th-grade class, where we encountered some ICT issues. Instead, we used the wordless book The Wave, which the students also enjoyed. In each class, Rozalija Drašler read the introductory words to the poems. The audience was mostly enthusiastic, though the 7th-grade students found the poems a bit difficult to understand.
The title picture was painted by Zala Kadunc.
The photos from the public performance and in the classrooms were taken by Maša Borković, Svit Turšič and Alenka Nikšič.
In our world we always take,
never give back,
someone has to wake,
responsibility is what we lack.
Be aware, care, value its worth.
don’t only shop but swap, I know I would,
at stake is our planet Earth.
Live a simple life, may seem hard, but you could.
Don’t be wasteful, don’t throw away,
in someone else’s closet your clothes can stay.
Have less possessions, buy local food,
for nature and your body it is good.
Reuse material, spend no money.
Have nice things?
Give to people that can’t afford.
Hana Krasnik Smolič, 8.b
The Time
Time is a reason
important to know,
time is a prison
there´s nowhere to go.
Time is a map,
that shows you the way,
time is a step
from spot you can´t stay.
Time is a game
everybody can play,
time is a shame
the biggest betray.
Time is a train
that drives you through life,
time is a pain
sharper than knife.
Time is a time
always with you,
it´s the beautiful rhyme
shows you what´s true.
Brigita Kočevar, 8.c
Home
What is home?
Everyone asks himself at least once in his lifetime.
Is it the warm hug?
Or maybe just a roof over your head?
Is it the hearing of the wind and the cry of the rain on your window at night?
Or just a warm place to stay?
Is it a family member, maybe a friend?
Is it, when you find peace in your own company?
That's something, someone would tell you,
but in reality home is when you make it a one.
Maša Borković, 9.a
